Research

Whether you reduce fertilizer use, keep your soil covered most of the year, or stop plowing to lower CO2 emissions, you are contributing to the fight against the climate crisis. Leading research centers, universities, and NGOs provide valuable knowledge to help agriculture become more resilient and prepared for future challenges.

On a December evening in 2007, a man at a gala dinner said:

«We, the human species, are confronting a planetary emergency – a threat to the survival of our civilization that is gathering ominous and destructive potential even as we gather here. But there is hopeful news as well: we have the ability to solve this crisis and avoid the worst – though not all – of its consequences, if we act boldly, decisively and quickly. […]

So today, we dumped another 70 million tons of global-warming pollution into the thin shell of atmosphere surrounding our planet, as if it were an open sewer. And tomorrow, we will dump a slightly larger amount, with the cumulative concentrations now trapping more and more heat from the sun.

As a result, the earth has a fever. And the fever is rising. The experts have told us it is not a passing affliction that will heal by itself. We asked for a second opinion. And a third. And a fourth. And the consistent conclusion, restated with increasing alarm, is that something basic is wrong.

We are what is wrong, and we must make it right.»

– We work alongside the following research centers and key organisations

Institute of Plant Breeding
and Genetic Resources
(IPB&GR)

The Institute of Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources (IPB&GR) is part of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization-Demeter (formerly NAGREF) supervised by the Ministry of Agriculture. Our main campus extends in a 30ha farm located at the outskirts of Thessaloniki, Greece.

Our main research targets include the preservation, evaluation, and exploitation of genetic resources and the development of new cultivars with improved yield, quality, and adaptation.

Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving

The Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving (CRES) is the Greek organisation for Renewable Energy Sources (RES), Rational Use of Energy (RUE) and Energy Saving (ES). CRES has been appointed as the national co-ordination centre in its area of activity.

CRES was founded in September 1987 by Presidential Decree 375/87. It is a public entity, supervised by the Ministry of Environment and Energy and has financial and administrative independence.

Its main goal is the research and promotion of RES/RUE/ES applications at a national and international level, as well as the support of related activities, taking into consideration the principles of sustainable development.

Earthworm Foundation

Earthworm Foundation is a non-profit organisation built on values and driven by the desire to positively impact the relationship between people and nature.

With most of our staff operating directly on the ground where the issues are, we work with our members and partners to make value chains an engine of prosperity for communities and ecosystems.

We see a world where forests are a boundless source of materials and a home for biodiversity; communities see their rights respected and have opportunities to develop; workers are seen as productive partners, and agriculture becomes the instrument to feed a hungry planet and keep our climate stable.

Academy of Entreneurship

Academy of Entrepreneurship is a non governmental, non-profit organization founded in 2007 under the auspices of the historical Educational Association of Athens “O HFAISTOS”.

Is an organisation of non-formal education and research in entrepreneurial topics, while promoting the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals, as set by the United Nations.

BEYOND
Centre of EO Research & Satellite Remote Sensing

The BEYOND Center of Excellence develops research and provides disaster management services addressing priorities and needs in South Eastern Europe, Mediterranean, N. Africa, Middle East and the Balkans.

It generated unique excellence and EO research infrastructure for the region. It maintains a fully operational and self-sustained activity, through competitive funding from Space research and operational projects supported by EU, ESA and International Funding Organisations.

The Center in its activity has been validated, and is performing in compliance to European Copernicus and ESA standards.

Agricultural University of Athens

The Agricultural University of Athens (AUA), founded in 1920, is Greece’s premier institution for higher education in agricultural and life sciences. Located in the heart of Athens, the university specializes in research and education focused on sustainable agriculture, food science, natural resource management, and biotechnology. With its long-standing academic tradition, AUA plays a key role in advancing innovation in Greek and Mediterranean agriculture.

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs through its various departments, including Crop Science, Animal Science, Agricultural Economics, and Biotechnology. It is actively involved in national and European research projects and maintains strong collaborations with farmers, industry stakeholders, and international institutions. Through its applied research and fieldwork, AUA contributes to addressing modern challenges such as climate change, food security, and rural development.
